The Phoenix Inn

The Phoenix has literally risen from the ashes. Google Streetview shows it as boarded up, but it has been open since 2008 after the present owners bought it from Marston's.

The pub dates back to the eighteenth century but the internal character derives from a nineteenth century refit - its front arrangement of public bar (originally the 'best smoke room'), side corridor with stand-up lobby, and top-glazed dividing screen, stemming from 1897 designs.

The Phoenix is now a freehouse where you can relax and enjoy a traditional pub atmosphere without the annoyance of gaming machines, televisions, juke boxes or mobile phones.

For the winter there is a real fire in the front bar. In summer you can take advantage of the paved beer garden, a sun trap looking onto the city walls.

They serve four real ales, three of which are permanent.

Food is served here; it is traditional bar food, sandwiches, pies, etc.

The extended rear bar of The Phoenix has a jazz theme with live jazz sessions, usually with free entry, two or three times a week.
