The Valiant Soldier

Off the A39 at Washford not far from Cleeve Abbey. The pub consists of a large open plan bar with separate skittle alley, a real fire in one corner and toilets on ground level, no separate restaurant. Food was good, not the usual "pub fayre" e.g. Thai seafood stir fry, duck in cranberry, soy & ginger sauce. There was also a good selection of vegetarian options. A separate children's menu is available, as are highchairs for very young customers. Food was reasonably priced and the staff very friendly. Food is served until 9pm. There is accommodation here and rooms are all en suite, comfortable, well decorated and the one we stayed in was large enough to put up a travel cot and still have room to move around overall. The real ales were well kept, and there was a good variety, Bass, Cottage Metro IPA and Exmoor Gold. The best was the range of real ales, quality of food, attitude of staff, children (including our 18 month old) very welcome. Worst was no real cider, address is given as Watchet, but is actually nearer Washford. Worth a Diversion. (Dave Chamberlain and Sian Northey)
